Changes in the PGP program
On 20 August 2018, the IRCC’s news release regarding acceptability of 20k new sponsorships bought a wave of joy for the parents and grandparents of the permanent residents of Canada. The past year cap for the immigration was 17k and thus in 2019, 3k new immigrants under this category will receive the benefit to settle down with their family members in Canada.
The news further got better when the announcement regarding the scrapping of lottery system or randomised selection process was done away with. For the first time, IRCC will entertain applications on first come and first serve basis! With the upcoming elections, the policy changes have definitely worked out in favour of the parents and grandparents of the permanent residents of Canada.
Parents and grandparents program and eligibility criteria:
The PGP is a category of Family class sponsorship program by Canadian government that helps unite the permanent residents with their parents and grandparents. Like the permanent resident, the parents and grandparents too avail the benefits of the permanent residency program which can be used for another application for Canadian citizenship. The program progresses once in an year albeit with a short window opportunity. Thus, if you wish to sponsor any person in this category, you need to apply for the same online. Application caps for 2018 were initially 10k but were later increased to 17k at the end of the year.
Eligibility criteria:
Any Canadian permanent resident, who wishes to sponsor their parents and grandparents to the nation may avail the benefits but if they meet the following factors:
- Age above 18 years
- Resident status of Canadian province
- Citizen or permanent resident of Canada or Indian under Canadian Indian act of Canada.
- Qualified as per income eligibility criteria.
- Must support the parents and their dependent financially.
- Further, the sponsor must qualify for the medical, criminal as well as background checks by the requisite authorities.

The PGP process starts with submission of an online interest to sponsor proforma. This will available for access post noon as per eastern standard time on January 28, 2019.
